How to Choose a Good Cover
Hello fellow writers! Today we will discuss a very important topic - how to choose a good cover. Although, we have a saying, "don't judge a book by its cover", many people still judge books by their covers, so choosing a good cover is essential.
First tip for choosing a good cover is: Find a good artist. Good artists are hard to find, but they're valuable, as well as their drawings, so always try to find a good artist and ask them to read your book and draw its cover for you. Experienced artists can decide very well what picture to choose that will suit the book, so let them help you!
Second tip: If you can't find a good artist, find a good picture. Internet is full of pictures, so if you're writing an ebook, surf the net and find the picture that best suits your story, and ask its maker to let you put it as your cover. They may demand money or credits, but remember, it is okay, as long as your book has a nice cover. After all, illustrators have a big influence upon the readers' imagination, so they deserve rewards for what they do!
Third tip: Even the words' shape is essential when putting up a cover. Remember this, beautiful calligraphy attracts the eye! Pay attention on how each letter is shaped on your cover, what font are you using, as it engages readers and prepares them for reading a proper book.
As an example, I will show you one of my own covers:
This picture belongs to an amazing artist, Tatiana Makeeva, a. k. a. tatianamakeeva on deviantart.com.
I came across Tatiana's picture on the internet, and as it resembled my story's dragon a lot, I asked her to let me put it up as my cover. I thank her a lot for allowing me this. :)
The book is called "Daniel and the Dragon Book", it's a first part of the duology "Daniel and the Mysteries", and the cover really suits the story, as one of the main characters there is the green dragon of wisdom.
Fourth tip: If you want a free image, type "free photos" in google search. Remember, if you don't type "free photos", and upload an image as your cover, it may irritate its owner. Nowadays there are a lot examples of how people steal pictures from their makers, so artists get disheartened when somebody takes their picture without their permission. If you want a free image that doesn't need allowance, just search for that free image!
Remember, free photos are never as gorgeous as the images that need allowance, so I would suggest to rarely use free images as covers. Artists need their pictures' advertisement too, and you're the one who can provide it for them, by putting their pictures as your cover, so they will get a lot of profit from it themselves, that means, they will often let you use their covers, so why not to try and ask them?
Have fun, and good luck with your masterpieces! And special thanks to the artists who let us use their wonderful pictures as our covers! You guys are awesome! :)
